Roman Portraits in Clay — A One-Day Sculpture Workshop – 21st November 2026

Bring ancient Roman faces to life in clay — a unique one-day sculpture workshop blending art history, 3D observation and hands-on creativity.

The Romans were masters of the portrait — capturing personality, age and character in stone and bronze with extraordinary skill. In this immersive one-day workshop, you’ll take on that same challenge in clay.

Working from a carefully curated selection of Roman portrait photographs, you’ll use a human skull model as your foundation — building outward to recreate what you see in the photograph, and imagining what lies beneath. This is as much an exercise in 3D awareness and careful observation as it is in sculpture, and the results are always surprising.
No previous experience is needed — just curiosity, patience and a willingness to look closely. By the end of the day you’ll have created your own portrait sculpture inspired by one of the greatest artistic traditions in history.
